Markr Privacy Policy
Web Highlighter & Annotator · Chrome Extension
Markr stores all your data locally on your device using your browser's built-in storage.
Nothing is transmitted to any server. No account required. Ever.
What data Markr stores
Markr stores the following data exclusively in your browser's local storage (chrome.storage.local):
- The text you highlight on web pages
- Notes and tags you attach to highlights
- Image URLs you attach to annotations
- The URL and title of the page where each highlight was made
- The XPath anchor used to restore highlights on page reload
- Your active highlight color preference
What data Markr does NOT collect
- No personal information of any kind
- No browsing history beyond the specific pages you annotate
- No analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting
- No usage statistics
- No data is ever transmitted to any server, including ALTRU.dev servers
Payment processing
Markr Pro upgrades are handled by ExtensionPay, an independent payment service. When you upgrade, ExtensionPay processes your payment via Stripe and communicates your paid status back to the extension. ALTRU.dev does not receive or store your payment card details. ExtensionPay's own privacy policy governs data collected during the payment process.
Permissions explained
- storage / unlimitedStorage — stores your annotations locally with no size cap, so large annotation collections (research notes, formulas, long passages) are never lost
- activeTab — injects the highlighter into the page you are currently viewing, only when you use the extension
- tabs / windows — used exclusively to identify which page is active so the annotation panel shows the correct page's highlights; no tab data is stored or transmitted
- contextMenus — adds a "Highlight with Markr" option to the right-click menu
- sidePanel — displays the annotation panel alongside your browser window
Data portability
Pro users can export all annotations at any time as Markdown, JSON, or CSV. You own your data completely. Uninstalling Markr removes all stored data from your device.
Children's privacy
Markr does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. The extension collects no personal information from any user regardless of age.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, the updated version will be posted at this URL. The extension version number in the Chrome Web Store listing will reflect the change.
